College Field Hockey Preseason Finishes Up in Style

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2014 FIELD HOCKEY
College Field Hockey Preseason Scrimmages Wrapped Up
  Season Begins August 29

VICTORIA, Minn.– The 2014 Field Hockey season is just a week away and most teams are out on the field using scrimmages to develop their team chemistry with the incoming fresh faces. Take a look below as to some of the results for each of these teams in their scrimmages and who they play in the regular season week one.

Old Dominion University won at Maryland (again) this time 4-3 Sunday

Hockey Today Preseason College Field Hockey Top-10 +1: (2013 Record) & Preseason/Schedule

1. UConn Huskies 21-4, BIG EAST (previously #2)
Preseason: None
August 31: Northwestern
Sept. 6: Penn State
*Roisin Upton was picked to win the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Award. Also UConn, the defending National Champions were picked by the BIG EAST Coaches to win the BIG EAST Regular Season.

2. ODU Lady Monarchs 13-8, BIG EAST (previously #3)
Preseason: Michigan W, 1-1 (4-2 shootout) GOALS: Rosario Villagra (2nd this offseason),
Shootout: Rosario Villagra, Kelsey Smither, Victoria Rezette, Sarah Breen
Norfolk, Va. - Senior forward Rosario Villagra scored her first goal since being injured last spring, while also delivering the first shootout goal to lift ODU to a 4-2 penalty stroke win against Michigan from the L.R. Hill Complex. I think (don't quote me) the last time Old Dominion played against the Wolverines #BigBlue defeated #GoBlue 6-1 in the NCAA Tournament back in 2012 to advance to the Elite Eight. Villagra scored her second this offseason as she managed to score the first goal against William & Mary last spring. The Lady Monarchs travel Sunday to face Maryland in their final preseason matchup. ODU's last two games on the road against the Terrapins have come in stunning fashion as they upset the No. 1-ranked Terps both times (3-2 in 2013 and 2-1 in 2012)
*ODU was picked by the BIG EAST Coaches to finish second in the conference. Senior captains Kelsey Smither and Rosario Villagra (Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year) are unanimous first team selections.

August 24 Scrimmage: @Maryland W, 4-3 GOALS: Nicole Goff, Victoria Rezette, Katy Fuhrman and Megan Byas

College Park, Md. - Elation. Excitement. Those are the emotions that surround one program at the end of the season. Today was just the end of the preseason, but don't tell Old Dominion University that. Today the Lady Monarchs achieved their fourth consecutive victory while visiting the University of Maryland. The Old Dominion Lady Monarchs defeated the Maryland Terrapins 4-3 in a preseason scrimmage and have not lost at College Park since 2010 (3-1). Last season ODU defeated No. 1-ranked Maryland 3-2 and the season before #BigBlue defeated the No. 1 Terps 2-1 (ODU also won at Maryland 5-2 in 2011). You see a trend developing here? 2-1, 3-2 and now 4-3. Last year in his first season Head Coach Andrew Griffiths was building a team based on defense and belief. The team allowed the second least amount of goals to the eventual national champion UConn Huskies and finished with a national best tying 12-game winning streak. So now with the addition of eight new players some of that talent can turn towards more of an offensive approach.

What makes this team stand out from some of the previous? Balance scoring. Today four different players tallied one goal- Nicole Goff, newcomer Victoria Rezette, Katy Fuhrman and Megan Byas (who was out for the majority of last season). Redshirt junior goalkeeper Megan Hept brought in another solid performance winning again at Maryland.

We haven't even mentioned All-American Kelsey Smither and returning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Rosario Villagra, both of whom are senior captains. What makes this a possible championship team? Unselfish play from the team's leaders. Today one can only guess as to how great their defense was and how many assists these players contributed, but the guess is many.

Last season the BIG EAST Championship was overlooked past the dominant ACC. However, if you saw the game in person it resembled a National Championship game. Last year the word was ALPHA..also known as New Beginnings. ODU established themselves as a powerhouse in the conference and the nation in some ways last season. Now, the word is RISE. One can define it many ways. I choose to think it means, Rise above your own ability, to a level you deserve. A National Champion. And maybe it helps that the Final Four is in Maryland this year?

ODU this offseason defeated William & Mary 4-0, beat Virginia, tied UNC, tied Duke, tied American 0-0, beat Richmond 2-0, tied Duke 1-1 and beat Michigan 1-1 with a 4-2 shootout. They finished 5-0-4 with today's win. Now onto a new chapter- the 2014 Regular Season.

My own quote- "Sometimes the best things, the richest things aren't supposed to come easily. Once you realize what you need to do to deserve it, the final outcome is that much sweeter."

August 24 Scrimmage: @Duke W, 3-1 GOALS: Casey Di Nardo, Emma Bozek, Sam Travers
Durham, NC. - The UNC Tar Heels defeated Duke on the road Sunday 3-1 in UNC's final preseason scrimmage. UNC struck first with under eight minutes to play with a goal off a corner by Sam Travers. Duke was able to tie the game with a goal on a penalty corner by Alexa Mackintire from Beltrani and Urdahl. UNC and Duke were tied 1-1 until just over 15 minutes left in regulation as Tar Heel Casey Di Nardo tipped in a goal off a penalty corner. The defending National Champions return all but three players from last year. They will have to replace goaltender Sarah Mansfield and captain Marie Elena Bolles. Head Coach Nancy Stevens led the Huskies to their first Championship and UConn's first since 1985. The Huskies are co-champions of the Big East Conference and have enough fire power to go far into the NCAA Tournament again this season. UConn plays host to Old Dominion on October 10th.

# 3 Old Dominion (Lady) Monarchs
ODU begins their quest for an NCAA best 10th National Title. The Lady Monarchs are coached by Andrew Griffiths who is in his second year after receiving the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award. His team returns their top five scorers and all but two key players from last year's run to the NCAA Tournament. All-American Back Christy Longacre and two-time Big East Honor Roll member Back Danielle Clutter have moved on, but Emily Harting among others are ready to step into a new role. Junior goalkeeper Megan Hept returns as one of the best goalies in the country (1.75 GAA, .752 SV, 8 shutouts) as she also impressed in the spring. Big East Second-Team junior midfielder Sarah Breen scored 27 points last year and took a team-high 47 shots on net. Breen is just one of several offensive experienced weapons the Lady Monarchs have this season and the main reason why they are my #3 team.
ODU looks to add their 10th NCAA Title this season

This team is led by senior co-captains Kelsey Smither and Rosario Villagra. Smither, a two-time All-American will need to fill in on both sides of the field as she did last year (14 assists). Villagra, last year's Big East Offensive Player of the Year returns as one of the nation's top scorers after leading ODU with 41 points during her junior campaign and as this year approaches "has high expectations for this season."

#1 Maryland Terrapins
The Maryland Terrapins begin their first year in the BIG 10. The Terps return star forward Anna Dessoye, who should be on the watch list for the Honda Award. Maryland comes to the BIG 10 a year after which they achieved yet another Final Four under Head Coach Missy Meharg. The Terps must replace one of their all-time great scorers in Jill Witmer, who has now continued her playing career on the U.S National team. This season the Terps will host the NCAA Field Hockey Championships in College Park, Maryland. This team has enough returning talent to make another deep run, while Brooke Cabrera may take over as goalie for the departured Natalie Hunter. Maryland has won five of the last nine NCAA Championships under Meharg.
