The 2014 French Open Men's Quarterfinals, Roland Garros, Paris, France
Frenchman Gael Monfils was down two sets to none and quickly bounced back with two sets of his own to get the crowd involved. Night was approaching as local time hit around 9:20 p.m, so Andy Murray wanted to call it a night and resume tomorrow. Unfortunately that would not be the case for Monfils as Murray won the fifth set 6-0 in devastating fashion.

Final Score: Andy Murray defeats Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0
Rafael Nadal made quick work of fellow Spaniard and countryman David Ferrer. Ferrer initially won the first set and showed a display of courage and belief that I haven't seen from him ever. However Rafa became greater as the match continued because of Ferrer's intensity. It truly was display that was frightening..the king of clay at his best as he won 10 straight games on route to another Paris win.
Nadal after his win against Ferrer in the Quarters |
This sets up a Semifinal Friday that looks like this on the Men's side:
#1 Rafa Nadal vs. #7 Andy Murray
#18 Ernesto Gulbis vs. #2 Novak Djokovic
*USA's Mardy Fish, Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro remain hurt and could not compete in this tournament.
The Minnesota Lynx are a perfect 7-0. Maya Moore appears to be reaching the pinnacle of her career where she will be the scoring threat every night with local guard Lindsey Whalen providing the assists. I would say seven games in that they appear to be on the track to World Champions again.
The Minnesota Twins are in the middle of a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Twins are 27-29 while the Brewers are 35-24. Minnesota is tied for last place in the Central division while Milwaukee is five games ahead of everyone in the NL Central.

I will be attending tomorrow night's game as Kevin Correia takes the mound for the Twins. It will be my first Twins game I will have attended in two years. I may not be in MN for the July All-star game as it will be played at Target Field...however the Future's Game is the one I would love to be at..Miguel Sano, Eddie Rosario, and Byron Buxton playing at the Twins home field would be awesome.
The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to be in the news for the wrong reasons. Kevin Love does not want to be in Minnesota as he wants to be with a contender. I believe he has earned the right to want to be somewhere else as the team has never made the playoffs with Love. Now maybe the Wolves will remember when they could have drafted Stephen Curry..that would have made a starting squad of Ricky Rubio at point guard, Curry at SG, Nik Pekovic at C, Love at PF and whoever can defend and set screens will occasionally score at SF. The NBA Finals are starting Thursday night. I think the Miami Heat will win their third straight title in 6 games over Argentina's Manu Ginobili and the Spurs.
The Minnesota Vikings drafted a decent QB of the future in Teddy Bridgewater from Louisville. As it so happens just a few days ago I passed the Louisville football stadium on my road trip back from Virginia to Minnesota. I believe the Vikings have enough now with a QB they can throw to actually contend in the division against the Packers and Bears. The part that confuses me is why they didn't draft a MLB...Is Jasper Brinkley really the answer? Instead they drafted a DE from UCLA that I continue to forget his name....CJ Mosley would have been the answer Speilman.
As of this moment Gopher Hockey's Mike Reilly will not be leaving early to the NHL, there is no word yet on either goalkeeper Adam Wilcox or senior center Kyle Rau whether they will be leaving early for Tampa Bay and Florida respectively. This coming after a tremendous season where the Gophers made the National Championship in Philly and I was there (will never forget it).
The Minnesota Wild will start to make news after the Stanley Cup is over. On July 1 they will have under 20 million to work with after signing HC Mike Yeo to an extension. Everyone (including myself) believes they will go after former Gopher LW Thomas Vanek and sell the seats and give Mikko Koivu the LW he deserves. Vanek helped the Gophers his FR season to a National Title and remains the most gifted stick handler I have ever seen.
The NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs begin tonight. I will be cheering for the Rangers after ESPN's Special Report on Ranger Dominic Moore. I think the Rangers will win in 7 games.
The Belmont Stakes have a Triple Crown contender for the first time since 2004 and the Soccer World Cup is underway with the US team being severe underdogs as they are in the bracket of Germany and Portugal (Ronaldo). I don't believe the US will get out of this draw.
Argentina is my pick to win the World Cup in Brazil. After this year's World Cup comes to a close I will not watch the World Cup in 2022 in Qatar.
